FHSAA reduces West Boca Raton LB Jawand Blue suspension; Olympic Heights still in appeals process

West Boca Raton linebacker Jawand Blue has had his six-week suspension for “throwing a punch” reduced to two weeks, the Florida High School Athletic Association confirmed Friday.

Blue, a Virginia Tech commit, was ejected from West Boca’s 19-0 win over Olympic Heights in last Friday’s kickoff classic. He had received two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. FHSAA documents obtained by the Palm Beach Post showed the game reports from the officials, who claimed Blue had thrown a punch at an Olympic Heights player. He was given the maximum penalty by the FHSAA, a six-week suspension that barred him from participating in team events.

West Boca Athletic Director Randy Kalman and coach Willie Dodaro both said no such punches were thrown and filed an immediate appeal. Their video of the event, they said, would prove their claims. The FHSAA apparently agreed.

Blue will miss West Boca’s rivalry game tonight against Boca Raton and next week’s matchup at Palm Beach Gardens, but he won’t miss any district contests. He’ll return to the lineup for West Boca’s district opener at home against Lake Worth.

Olympic Heights coach Travis Johnson confirmed Friday that his player, Maynard Laguerre, was the previously unidentified player who’d been ejected in the second half of the same game. Officials said Laguerre had also thrown punches. Johnson said the school is in the process of appealing the junior Laguerre’s six-week suspension and would also take internal disciplinary measures.
