Statewide poll, Week 1: Dwyer drops, three area teams earn top spots

By Matt Porter

Statewide polls are a tough beast to tame, and never are they wilder than in the preseason.

Teams are rarely ranked properly before they’ve played a game. Realistically, they’re not ranked properly until the last games of the season have been played. So until we get there, consider each poll incrementally better than the last.

That said, the statewide voters are dedicated to their craft, and try as hard as they can to get it right. To that end, the Week 1 poll was released a day late to allow voters to think about Dwyer—Glades Central. No one needed to think too hard about dropping Dwyer after its 24-10 loss. But how far? The Panthers fell to fifth in Class 7A with 77 points (remember, 10 points for a first-place vote, 9 for a second, and so on). At this point, St. Thomas Aquinas has a death grip on the top spot, and it’s going to take a series of dominant efforts for the Panthers to climb back up there. If Aquinas loses, they could be No. 1 sometime down the road.

There are a few statewide No. 1s in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, none of whom are riding higher than Glades Central. The Raiders earned first place votes from all but one voter in Class 5A. However, Miami Norland received the majority of the second-place votes, so if the Raiders slip up, Norland could overtake them. Both teams were tied atop their class last week.

American Heritage’s win over Atlantic convinced enough voters that the Stallions are first-place worthy. They grabbed nine No. 1 votes in Class 3A, with University taking a close second.

Then there’s Class 2A. Jupiter Christian moves into first, with 10 first-place votes. Despite a pair of first-place votes, Glades Day slides from first to third after its loss to Miami-Pace.

Elsewhere, Seminole Ridge holds at No. 7 in Class 8A after its win over Palm Beach Central, which was neither sloppy nor stellar … Lake Worth moves up a spot in 7A after handling Olympic Heights in Week 1 … Atlantic’s loss to American Heritage didn’t scare voters, who threw a few confidence votes the Eagles’ way … As expected, Fort Pierce Westwood dropped out of the rankings.
