Baseball: 2011 Perfect Game WWBA championship begins Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter

By Matt Porter

Five Palm Beach County amateur teams are part of the nation’s premier amateur baseball tournament, which begins Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

West Palm Beach-based Palm Beach PAL, Jupiter-based Palm Beach Select and three Boca Raton teams – PG Crimson Bandits, South Florida Bandits and South Florida PG Kelly Green – are part of an 85-team field that will vie for a spot in Sunday’s championship game.

More than 50 Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast players are playing, including most of the top seniors and juniors for the upcoming high school baseball season.

The wood-bat tournament is hosted by Perfect Game USA, the nation’s largest amateur scouting service. Scouts from every major league organization and all major colleges are expected to attend.

The scene is busy, according to Palm Beach Select coach Andy Mook, who is entering his first season as Jupiter High coach.

“You’ll see anywhere from 100 to 200 golf carts,” he said. “Every Major League Baseball team. Tons and tons of college scouts. One time you may see a big prospect pitching, and you’ll see 25 to 30 scouts with radar guns crowding around.”
