Glades Central linebacker Dominique Gibson commits to Wake Forest

By Jeff Greer

He’s known as one of Glades Central’s hardest hitters and toughest players, and on Friday night, Dominique Gibson became the school’s latest BCS-bound prospects.

Gibson is the first Glades Central Class of 2012 prospect to commit to a school.

Gibson (5-10, 190, No. 6 on the Big Board) said he verbally committed to Wake Forest. The senior text messaged his news to the Post after his team’s blowout win over Fort Pierce Westwood.

The commitment wasn’t a major surprise — Gibson had long expressed his strong interest in playing for the Demon Deacons, particularly after visiting the Winston-Salem, N.C., school a month ago. Wake Forest has several other Palm Beach County products on its team, including three Pahokee grads.

“That’s where I feel will best fit me,” Gibson said. “I love the program and the great education ahead of me.”

Before the season Gibson listed Vanderbilt and Marshall in his top three schools along with Wake. He also had scholarship offers from East Carolina, Kentucky and Memphis. He raved about the quality of education he’d receive at schools like Wake and Vanderbilt, two of the top academic universities in the country.

Gibson plays outside linebacker for Glades Central, but his versatility is one of his best assets. He also spends time at running back and plays on special teams. After an injury to Glades Central’s regular kickoff specialist last year, Gibson handled those duties, too. He’s projected as a defensive athlete for college.

He was a first-team All-Area selection last season, scoring three defensive touchdowns, and he was a preseason Super 11 selection before the 2011 season.
