Glades Day’s Kelvin Taylor (130 yards) moves closer Emmitt Smith’s state record

By Matt Porter

No. 9 Glades Day lost 45-0 to Ocala-Trinity Catholic Friday night, and while Kelvin Taylor didn’t reach the end zone, he inched closer to Emmitt Smith’s state rushing record.

Taylor gained 130 yards on 28 carries, giving him 1,635 yards this season. He now has 8,281 career yards, 523 yards shy of the 8,804 Smith put up at Pensacola-Escambia from 1983-86.

With three games left, Taylor could break Smith’s record before the end of the regular season. Glades Day (4-3)  travels to Summit Christian next Friday, hosts Zion Lutheran Nov. 4 and ends the regular season by with a Nov. 11 trip to South Fork.

Taylor was held without a touchdown for the fourth time in 44 career games. It was his first scoreless game  since Week 3 of the 2010 season against Dade Christian (19 carries, 95 yards).

Taylor also broke a nine-game streak of games in which he gained more than 200 yards, dating to the opening game of the 2010 playoffs. He had put up at least 237 yards and 2 touchdowns in every game since then.
