Glades Day’s Kelvin Taylor now 420 yards away from Emmitt Smith’s state rushing record

By Matt Porter

Kelvin Taylor’s assault on the record books has slowed, but the Glades Day star can still break Emmitt Smith’s record during the 2011 regular season.

Taylor

In Glades Day’s 41-6 win Friday over Summit Christian, Taylor rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 first-half carries.

Taylor’s 103 yards gives him 1,738 yards this season. He now has 8,384 career yards, 420 yards shy of the 8,804 Smith put up at Pensacola-Escambia from 1983-86.

Granted, he played a half (and had three touchdowns) but the 103 yards was Taylor’s lowest output this season. He posted 130 yards on 28 carries Oct. 21 against Ocala-Trinity Catholic.

Taylor has two games to break Smith’s record before the end of the regular season. Glades Day (5-3) hosts Zion Lutheran Friday and finishes with a Nov. 11 trip to South Fork.

Friday’s win over Summit gave the Gators the District 7-2A title, so Taylor will have at least one more game in the playoffs to break the record this year.
