Girls’ volleyball: Martin County’s Nicole Walch, Krissy Schmidt finish second in player and coach of the year voting

By Jeff Greer

Martin County’s record-setting outside hitter Nicole Walch and second-year coach Krissy Schmidt finished second in player and coach of the year voting, respectively, for the Florida Dairy Farmers statewide awards.

Walch, a senior who has signed to play at FSU with her sister Elise, collected six first-place votes and 120 points for the Dairy Farmers Player of the Year, finishing behind Tampa Berkeley Prep star Jordan Burgess. Meanwhile, in the Coach of the Year voting, Schmidt lost out by 31 points to Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino.

Lake Worth Christian outside hitter Kristen Reid finished sixth in the Player of the Year voting.

Martin County won the Class 7A state championship. Both Burgess and Dagostino won the same awards last year.
