Wellington hires former assistant Thomas Abel as its new head football coach

By Jeff Greer

Weeks removed from the resignation of former head coach Chris Romano, Wellington football has a new leader in place.

The school announced Wednesday that former assistant coach Thomas Abel will take over as the Wolverines’ new head coach. Abel was an assistant coach at Wellington for the past five seasons.

“We are looking forward to working with Coach Abel,” Wellington Athletic Director Pattie Fitzhugh said in a release.

Abel played college football at Findlay University in Ohio. He was an assistant coach at L’Anse Creuse and Memphis high schools in Michigan before moving to Florida.

Wellington finished 1-9 last season and missed the post-season. The Wolverines were district champions in 2010.
