John I. Leonard football player, 16, killed in Greenacres car crash

By Matt Porter

John I. Leonard High student Alex Fils Jean, 16, died Wednesday morning after he lost control of his car and hit a tree on Lake Worth Road near L.C. Swain Middle School.

The Post‘s Alexandra Seltzer reports Greenacres Police and Fire Rescue responded to the 5400 block of Lake Worth Road around 5:15 this morning. At the scene they found Jean, of Greenacres, in a 2009 Nissan Versa.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Tim Frith said Jean didn’t have a valid license, and shouldn’t have taken the car out.

John I. Leonard Athletic Director Scott Siegel said Jean, who played junior varsity football, was known as a quiet, diligent student-athlete.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s tragic at this time of year,” Siegel said. “There are kids texting and calling to make sense of this.”

“We don’t know where he was going,” Siegel said. We just don’t know why he took his parents’ car without permission.”

As a junior last season, Jean won the JV Coaches Award for hard work. He was brought up to the varsity when the JV season was over. According to family members, he wanted to attend Indiana University following high school.

“When the season was over, he was in the weight room getting ready for next year’s football season,” Siegel said.

Siegel said the school, which is on break for two more weeks, will hold crisis intervention when classes return to session.
