Former Olympic Heights coach Mitch Henghold hired as Forest Hill’s defensive coordinator

By Jeff Greer

Mitch Henghold said he needed a break from coaching when he stepped down as Olympic Heights’ football coach in March of 2011.

But he couldn’t stay away from football very long. Last fall, he was the defensive coordinator at Fort Lauderdale-Calvary Christian, and now he’s back in Palm Beach County.

Henghold was hired Tuesday as Forest Hill’s defensive coordinator.

Henghold’s Calvary Christian defense allowed 19.6 points a game in 2011. Calvary was 7-3 but missed the playoffs. The Eagles compete in the same district as American Heritage, Cardinal Newman, Benjamin, King’s Academy, Pahokee and Pope John Paul II.

Forest Hill will run a 3-4 base defense under Henghold, something Forest Hill head coach Chris Kokell planned on implementing before the 2012 season. Kokell said Olympic Heights’ defense under Henghold “was always stingy, always working hard.” Kokell, who coached in the Boca area for several years before taking the Forest Hill job, said it was a simple hire to make.

“His teams were tough,” said Kokell, who added that he almost took an assistant coaching job under Henghold earlier in his career. “The defenses were always good. Plus, I figured I’d bring in another coach with head coaching experience in here to help me out.”
