Football: American Heritage DE Mike Wallace commits to Stetson

By Matt Porter

The unknown can be scary, but American Heritage’s Mike Wallace is diving in head-first.

Though Stetson hasn’t played a down of football since 1957, Wallace decided to pledge to the school. The Hatters are now recruiting their first class of football players since dropping the sport more than 50 years ago.

Wallace is believed to be the program’s first football commitment since then.

Stetson will participate in a practice season this fall. In 2013, the Hatters begin play in the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship Football Championship Subdivision (Div. 1-AA) league which includes Jacksonville and Dayton.

Wallace (6-0, 215, No. 48 on the Big Board), who won a Class 3A state title with American Heritage last month, registered 25 sacks and 32 tackles for loss for a combined 245 yards lost in his senior season.

The school is currently building a $6.7 million football field and athletics complex on its DeLand campus.
