Football: Royal Palm Beach LB Teddy Matthews commits to Wake Forest

By Matt Porter

Royal Palm Beach’s one-win season in 2010 limited exposure for its players, and lean, mean pass rusher Teddy Matthews was no exception.

The Wildcats’ turnaround in 2011 helped many in the county realize Matthews could play. Wake Forest certainly noticed.

Matthews (6-3, 225, No. 41 on the Big Board) committed to Wake on Sunday while visiting the North Carolina school. He leaves behind offers from UCF and FAU.

Matthews, a first-team All-Area selection, merited consideration for large schools defensive player of the year. A dominant player on the edge, he racked up 102 tackles and six sacks. He was the heart of a Wildcats (7-4) defense that allowed 20.2 points per game.

He also earned honorable mention All-State and All-Conference honors.

Two of the top prospects on the PBGametime Big Board are Deacons-to-be. Glades Central linebacker Dominique Gibson (No. 7) is committed. Jupiter quarterback Tyler Cameron (No. 13) enrolled at Wake last week.
