Cardinal Newman football coach Steve Walsh, whose staff took a hit this offseason, said he has replenished the sidelines.

Walsh’s new defensive coordinator is Bill Ameral, who was most recently defensive coordinatorline coach at Palm Beach Central. In previous stops, he spent a rocky few years at Royal Palm Beach and won a state title at American Heritage.

He replaces Kevin Fleury, who spent three years as Walsh’s defensive coordinator before leaving to coach Olympic Heights.

Walsh’s new wide receivers coach is former NFL star Anthony Carter (right).

Carter, 51, was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Minnesota Vikings, a legend at Michigan who held nearly every receiving and returning school record when he graduated, and a Suncoast star who later became a member of the FHSAA’s All-Century team. This is his first coaching job.

Walsh also said Kevin Fisher, who was offensive line coach for two years before taking last season off, will return to coach the offensive line. He retained linebackers coach Mike Pinkney, a former Miami linebacker who played at Wellington.

“We have a couple other guys we’re working out the details on,” said Walsh, who is recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back.

Last year, Newman (9-2) had its first nine-win season since 2001. The Crusaders lost to Davie-University in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament.

Noteworthy: Walsh said sophomore running back Sha’corey Foster, who put up 493 yards and 7 TDs as a 5-5, 145-pound sophomore, left Newman for Palm Beach Gardens.
