Fort Pierce Central LB Freedom Whitfield commits to FAU

By Jeff Greer

In the wake of news that FAU lost two commitments from John I. Leonard yesterday, the Owls got some good news Tuesday. Fort Pierce Central’s fiery linebacker Freedom Whitfield has committed to FAU.

The TCPalm reported Whitfield’s commitment this morning. Whitfield, one of the top linebackers on the Treasure Coast, had 109 tackles, including eight for loss, three sacks, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He scored four touchdowns to the Cobras, who lost in the Class 7A region final to eventual state champ Bradenton-Manatee.

Whitfield (6-2, 200 pounds, No. 52 on the Big Board) only had one scholarship offer — from FAU — but UCF, Middle Tennessee State and others showed interest in him. He’s the first Fort Pierce Central senior to pick a school this winter, and the fifth area player to commit to FAU. John I. Leonard defensive end Andy Daceus and receiver Nesly Ovincy decommitted from FAU this week, though it’s unclear if the Boca school ever accepted their commitments or had space for them in the first place.
