Royal Palm Beach’s Teddy Matthews signs with Wake Forest, Tremane McCullough nixes FAU

By Matt Porter

There was only one hat on the table in front of Teddy Matthews. The Royal Palm Beach linebacker signed with Wake Forest.

Matthews becomes the first Royal Palm Beach football signee under new coach Willie Bueno. The Wildcats (7-4) went 1-9 two years ago, before Bueno took over and led them to the playoffs.

“When the coaches got here, it wasn’t the best program,” Matthews said. “But [the coaches] believed in us. For me to grow and be under their wings, it was a great experience that I’ll never forget.”

Matthews (6-3, 210) joins a strong Demon Deacons recruiting class that includes early enrolled quarterback Tyler Cameron (Jupiter) and Glades Central linebacker Dominique Gibson.

“Hopefully it’s the first of many here at Royal Palm,” Bueno said.

The other story at Royal Palm: running back Tremane McCullough was nowhere to be seen. McCullough, a late qualifier, had been rumored to be heading to FAU. However, Wildcats coaches said he would no longer sign there even if offered, adding that new coach Carl Pelini’s staff “mishandled” the recruiting process.

McCullough may wind up at Middle Tennessee State, which has not yet offered but may be the end of signing day.

Elsewhere at Royal Palm, softball player Jenna Belloch signed with the College of Central Florida.
