Virginia Tech upset over losing West Boca Raton recruits to Miami

By Matt Porter

Updated 1:45 p.m. Miami signed two West Boca Raton players formerly bound for Virginia Tech, and in the case of one, the Hokies’ coaching staff is not pleased.

Just before noon, West Boca Raton linebacker Ja Wand Blue signed with ACC rival Miami, informing Virginia Tech assistant coach Charley Wiles of his switch by phone.

“You lied to me,” Wiles told Blue.

Blue told Wiles he wanted to stay closer to home, so he signed with Miami.

“This doesn’t make sense,” said Wiles, the Hokies’ defensive line coach. “I’ve never felt more betrayed or lied to.”

Wiles tried to sway Blue by touting his program’s cleanliness – seemingly a shot at Miami, which could be in line for NCAA sanctions following the Nevin Shapiro scandal – and the Hokies’ performance in bowl games.

“We need you,” Wiles said.

Nonetheless, Blue faxed in his letter, joining Palm Beach Central’s Angelo Jean-Louis and Gabriel Terry as 2012 UM commits from Palm Beach County.

Last year, Lockhart signed but didn’t qualify at Virginia Tech. He spent last fall at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. After the season, Miami swooped in and grabbed him from the Hokies.

West Boca Raton coach Willie Dodaro said Lockhart satisfied academic requirements for the NCAA Clearinghouse by Tuesday’s deadline.

Elsewhere, athlete Billy Occean and linebacker Jimmy Masson signed with Robert Morris.

Girls soccer players Jordyn Richman signed with Temple, and Sara Ballante signed with Lander University in South Carolina.
