Gardens lineman Anthony Hicks signs with Florida Tech; Gary Holmes close

By Jeff Greer

Two area prospects picked their colleges on Tuesday, and a third, Seminole Ridge running back Gary Holmes, is very close to making his choice.

Palm Beach Gardens two-way lineman Anthony “Squirt” Hicks (6-2, 250, No. 57 on the Big Board) signed with new Division II program Florida Tech. John Carroll athlete Aukeemian Mills, who transferred to the Fort Pierce school from Okeechobee after his junior season, committed to West Virginia Wesleyan.

Hicks may be joined by Holmes (5-9, 175, No. 16 on the Big Board), who is close to signing with Florida Tech. Holmes is waiting to hear how much scholarship money Tech can provide, Seminole Ridge coach Matt Dickmann said.

The running back originally was going to pick between Middle Tennessee State and Western Michigan, but both schools pulled their offers from Holmes in the days leading up to national signing day. Dickmann said scores of coaches were interested in Holmes, but his offers fell through too late, leaving many schools without any space to re-recruit him.

Holmes, who ran for 1,481 yards and 24 touchdowns this past fall, is also considering Delta State, a Division II program in Mississippi that has gained notoriety for its football teams over the past decade. We’ll have more on Holmes in the coming weeks.
