PALM BEACH CENTRAL COACH BRUCE GAFFNEY

“We made some bad decisions with the ball. One of those nights. And you can’t have one of those nights on a night like tonight.”

[On the difference in the fourth quarter, in which Krop outscored Central 21-10] “Krop stepped up their defensive pressure. We made some bad passes at some bad times. We picked up the ball in some bad spots. We didn’t come to the ball when we needed to. Their intensity in the passing game, we didn’t match it.”

“I’m proud of these girls. They played hard. They made some bad decisions at the end of the game, but those girls played with their hearts tonight.”

“They played with energy and they played with effort. We just didn’t match the mental intensity of handling the ball against that pressure.”

PALM BEACH CENTRAL SENIOR MARIAH-CAUHRYN SMELSER

[On the end of the game] “It was crazy.”

“We’re used to getting it down to the final seconds and making something happen. This time it didn’t work.”

“All I can say is we left everything on the court. I’m proud of everybody. I’m proud of my school.”

“I mean, it sucks. One point. We did what we had to do. We left everything on the court.”

“I’ll look back and think I’m just happy that my team made it to states.”

[Responding to running joke about her colorful choices in shoes. Smelser wore insanely bright neon-yellow shoes] “Maybe I should have worn the black ones. It would have changed everything.”

DR. KROP JUNIOR IESHIA SMALL

“It feels great. I dedicated this game to my mom. I promised her I would do everything I could to win this game.”

[On her first-quarter collision with a teammate, which forced her to miss the latter part of the half] “We both went for the ball, but the front of her foot went in my throat. I had to get myself together for a minute. I wanted to stay in, but he told me to sit down. I couldn’t swallow for a little bit. I said though, I had to get back in the game. I said I would do whatever it takes to win the game. And I’ll do whatever it takes to win tomorrow.”

“Final seconds … it was, ‘Oh no! and then, Oh yes.’”

[On the end of the game] “I had faith in my teammates we were going to get the ball back. As soon as we got the ball back, our defense was already crunked up. When we got crunked up, I knew we had it and everything.”

DR. KROP COACH RAY THOMPSON

[On what he told his team going into the fourth quarter] “Five baskets. That’s what I was selling them on. We were down five baskets.”
