Dwyer hoops star Joel James in the running for Florida Mr. Basketball

By Jeff Greer

He was the biggest name in Palm Beach County basketball this season — and the biggest kid. Now Joel James, Dwyer’s 6-foot-11, North Carolina-bound center, has a shot at Florida’s Mr. Basketball award, which is given to the state’s best player.

James, who averaged 14.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game, led a young Dwyer team to the Class 8A region quarterfinals, a year after winning the Class 5A state title. He was selected as the Class 8A player of the year this season. The nominees for the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball award are the class-by-class players of the year.

Here’s the full list of nominees:

Joel James, Dwyer (8A)
Clyde Geffrad, Blanche Ely (7A)
Cleon Roberts, Norland (6A)
Russell Wilson, Lake Wales (5A)
Joel Berry, Lake Highland Prep (4A)
Devontae Morgan, Tampa Prep (3A)
Tonye Jekiri, Hialeah Champagnat Catholic (2A)
Alex Hamilton, Chipley (1A)
