Glades Central softball team to wear hoodies Friday night to support Trayvon Martin

By Jeff Greer

Add Glades Central’s softball team to the list of groups showing solidarity for Trayvon Martin.

For their 6 p.m. Friday game at Palm Beach Lakes, the Raiders will wear hooded sweatshirts, which Martin was wearing when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch captain who was patrolling a Sanford, Fla., townhouse community when he shot and killed Martin. Martin’s death has captured national attention and created an uproar over gun laws in Florida, while Zimmerman has claimed he acted in self-defense and has not been arrested.

Glades Central coach Charles Walker, who played recreational softball with Martin’s father, Tracy, in the Fort Lauderdale area, wanted to show his support through his team.

“I want to show the family some support in the position I’m in as a coach,” Walker said. “I knew (Trayvon). He wasn’t a bad kid. The kids are just joining in.”
