Softball: Palm Beach Gardens wins Kissimmee Klassic, Shelby Turnier named MVP

By Jeff Greer

The first loss of the season seemed to motivate Palm Beach Gardens softball.

The Gators, ranked in the top five in both MaxPreps and ESPN’s national high school softball rankings, rolled through the prestigious Kissimmee Klassic softball tournament over the weekend, beating four opponents by a combined 48-2 score. Gardens (22-1) lost its first game of the season at Gulliver Prep’s Slam Fest tournament over spring break two Fridays ago.

Park Vista was 2-2 at the Klassic, including a nice win over Cypress Bay. Jensen Beach was also 2-2.

Gardens ace Shelby Turnier, who notched her second no-hitter of the season at the tournament, won tournament MVP. She pitched 24 innings over the four games, allowing no earned runs off seven hits while striking out 31 and walking seven. The UCF signee was also 3-for-6 at the plate, with a home run, double and three RBI.

The road doesn’t get any easier for Park Vista, which returns to Palm Beach County with a Tuesday date at American Heritage. The third-ranked Cobras then play fourth-ranked West Boca Raton on Thursday, though that one will be in the friendly confines of West Boynton Park, Park Vista’s home field.

Gardens plays Poland Seminary, an Ohio team that spends part of its spring break in Florida playing out-of-state opponents, on Tuesday, then finishes the week at home against Suncoast.

Softball district tournaments begin next week. Check PBGametime.com later this week for schedules and analysis of the upcoming tournaments.
