Cardinal Newman QB Brett Benes to sign with University of Charleston

By Jeff Greer

Graduating Cardinal Newman quarterback Brett Benes, one of the most efficient signal callers in the county over the past two seasons, will on Wednesday sign his national letter of intent.

Benes (6-0, 170 pounds) will sign with University of Charleston, a Division II program in Charleston, W. Va., that restarted in 2003 after the school abolished football in 1955. Charleston competes in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The steady-handed Benes threw 15 touchdown passes against two interceptions as a senior, completing 58 percent of his passes for 1,123 yards. Cardinal Newman had its first nine-win season since 2001 with Benes, a two-year starter, at the helm. The Crusaders lost 37-15 to Fort Lauderdale-University in the Class 3A region quarterfinals.
