Track and field: what to watch for at Class 2A, 1A regionals

We’re heading toward the finish of the 2012 track season. Small schools are into regionals, while large schools are holding district meets this week.

Here’s what to watch for Class 2A and 1A regionals, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday in Miami:

CLASS 2A REGIONALS

Where: Ansin Sports Complex, Miramar

When: 1 p.m. Wednesday

Storyline: Suncoast wants a boys team title, but will have to do it without star sprinter Antwan Wright (hamstring). Wright, a senior headed to Florida, is ranked fifth in the state (all classes) in the 200 and eighth in the 100. He was injured during last week’s District 13-2A meet.

Top area boys: Suncoast – Davison Colimon (110 hurdles), Gabriel Aird (300 hurdles), Abiade Granger (high jump), Justin Deithorn (pole vault), Justin Wright (shot put), 1,600, 3,200 relays; Pahokee – 400, 1,600 relays, Davaris Osborne (400); St. Andrew’s – Nic Jacobsen (3,200).

Top area girls: Suncoast – Aluntrea Davis (100, 200), Bianca Joseph (100 hurdles); Glades Central – 400, 1,600 relays; St. Andrew’s – Angela Alvarez (shot put, discus); Inlet Grove – Alon Lewis (400); Dreyfoos – Jenna Meyers-Sinett (pole vault); Lincoln Park – 1,600, 3,200 relays.

CLASS 1A

Where: Miami-Dade Christian

When: 1 p.m. Thursday

Storyline: As they did during last week’s District 13-1A meet, Benjamin and King’s Academy will battle for the crown as the top Class 1A school in Palm Beach County. Both boys and girls teams are strong.

Top area boys: Benjamin – Trenton Saunders (discus, shot put), Benjamin Horowitz (pole vault); King’s Academy – Ricardo Roy (200, 400), Caleb Walz (800), Scott Simpson (1,600, 3,200), 1,600, 3,200 relays; Glades Day – Calvin Darville (triple jump); Community Christian – Alex Roberts (100).

Top area girls: Benjamin – Meredith Anderson (1,600, 3,200), Taylor Cogsil (pole vault, triple jump, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Hunter Sullivan (discus, shot put), 3,200 relay; Riley Burke (800); King’s Academy – Kimberly Ruch (long jump, 100, 200), Cat Urso (800), 400, 1,600, 3,200 relays.
