Hoops: Dwyer’s Joel James invited to U.S. U18 national team tryouts

By Jeff Greer

Graduating Dwyer basketball star Joel James will play this fall for North Carolina, one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country. But before he leaves for college, the 6-foot-11 center could end up representing the United States.

James, who averaged 16 points and 14 rebounds as a senior this winter, was one of 24 high school players invited to try out for the USA Basketball U18 National Team, which will compete in the FIBA Americans U18 Championships in Brazil in mid-June. Tryouts will be held June 5-12 at the USA Basketball facilities in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team will be coached by Florida’s Billy Donovan. Gonzaga head coach Mark Few and Virginia Commonwealth head coach Shaka Smart will be Donovan’s assistants.
