The best player in last season’s Class 3A state title game, American Heritage running back Greg Bryant, will get a chance to play in another big game in January.
Bryant committed to play in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the nationally televised all-star game featuring many of the nation’s top seniors. He is one of two area players to commit to playing in a major showcase game, joining Glades Day running back Kelvin Taylor, who last week was added to the Under Armour All-America Game roster.
Bryant (5-11, 205), an Oklahoma commit, rushed for 2,180 yards and 35 touchdowns in helping American Heritage win the Class 3A state title. He is considered one of the top few running backs in the country for the upcoming recruiting class.
Last year’s game was televised on NBC and played in San Antonio.
Heritage schedule taking shape: The creation of the independent South Florida Football Conference left American Heritage with a few holes in its schedule, but they appear to be filled.
With Benjamin and Pope John Paul II dropping out of District 7-3A, Heritage has two extra non-district game slots, for a total of six.
Aside from Atlantic and Glades Central, which Heritage played last season, the Stallions will visit Class 6A state champion Armwood, which finished 2011 ranked No. 3 in the country; Class 4A regional semifinalist Miami-Gulliver Prep; and West Monroe, La., which won the Louisiana Class 5A state title in 2009 and 2011.
Heritage’s schedule looks like this:
Kickoff Classic: Cocoa
Week 1: Atlantic
Week 2: at Armwood
Week 3: at Glades Central
Week 4: King’s Academy*
Week 5: at Pahokee*
Week 6: bye
Week 7: at Miami-Gulliver Prep
Week 8: at Cardinal Newman*
Week 9: at West Monroe, La.
Week 10: Fort Lauderdale-Calvary Christian*
Week 11: TBA
La Sala commits: Heritage senior Nick La Sala committed to Stetson, joining the resurrected DeLand program along with former Heritage defensive end Mike Wallace.
La Sala (6-1, 200) was a placekicker and backup quarterback for the Stallions. He had opportunities at Marist and Hobart. Stetson begins play in the fall of 2013.
