Softball: Mapping out the regional quarterfinals

By Jeff Greer

The next level of the postseason is here, and the stakes are even higher. Lose, and the season is over. Let’s break down each class’s regional playoff bracket, listing favorites, local matchups and more.

Housecleaning first: Admission to each regional playoff game, regardless of round, is $7. Here’s the schedule:

Regional quarterfinals: Tuesday, April 24, or Wednesday, April 25
Regional semifinals: Friday, April 27
Regional finals: Tuesday, May 1
State semifinals and finals: May 7-14 in Clermont

Class 8A
Favorite: Palm Beach Gardens.
Contenders: Jupiter, Flagler Palm Coast, Palm Harbor University, Park Vista.
Local players to watch: Gardens P Shelby Turnier (23-1, 0.75 ERA), Jupiter P Kylee Hanson (13-4, 0.44 ERA), Park Vista 2B Alexandra Ortiz (.444, 6 HR, 32 RBI).

Quick snapshot: The obvious local storyline is how Palm Beach Gardens, the No. 1 team in the country, responds to its district-final loss to Jupiter. Jupiter, on the other hand, has a major chance to capitalize on the momentum from that win to break the regional playoff curse that has kept the Warriors out of the state tournament. Park Vista is the wild card team here. The Cobras narrowly lost to Gardens back in March, and are itching for another shot at the Gators. And don’t sleep on Boca, a team led by slugger Pepper Butler. The Bobcats can mash.

All games at 7 p.m. Tuesday unless noted. Local teams bolded.

Region 1
Hagerty at TBD
TBD at Lake Mary
Apopka at TBD
TBD at West Orange

Local players to watch: West Boca P Sydney Elkin (18-3, 1.15 ERA).

Quick snapshot: West Boca has a great chance at reaching Clermont, but the Bulls have a few obstacles along the way. Santaluces has been a tough group all season. Down south, both St. Thomas Aquinas and Cooper City present potential trip-ups. West Boca is still the favorite in Region 4.

Quick snapshot: Jensen Beach has been hot of late, but the Falcons slipped in the district title and must play state No. 2 Plantation-American Heritage in the opening round. That’s a tough task. Suncoast gets a first-round reprieve, but the Chargers still have a tough road out of the region.

Local players to watch: American Heritage P Corrie Boggess (7-5, 1.14 ERA, .444, 5 HR, 30 RBI), King’s Academy P Aubree Murphy (18-3, 1.32 ERA).

Quick snapshot: Hard to miss the potential for a King’s-American Heritage state semifinal in Clermont next month. Both teams can get there. Murphy has to be the ace pitcher she is. Boggess’s bat is a big part of what Heritage does, and the Stallions can turn around a late-season rollercoaster ride with some nice early-round confidence builders.

Favorite: Pine Castle Christian.
Contenders: Canterbury, All Saints Academy, Grandview Prep.
Local players to watch: Grandview Prep P Jane Sallen (8-2, 0.66 ERA).

Quick snapshot: All three local teams can play. Lake Worth Christian and Wellington Christian are good clubs. Grandview Prep has the pedigree, with back-to-back trips to state under its belt. And the pitcher for those runs, Sallen, is still there. The Pride should return to Clermont.
