Live from Clermont: American Heritage wins another state softball title

By Jeff Greer

American Heritage has one game left in its state softball title defense, and it comes against Jacksonville-Bishop Snyder. Follow here for live updates of the Class 3A state championship.

Final
American Heritage got itself in trouble early, but dug out of some early jams with great defense. Then the Stallions’ bats and Corrie Boggess’s pitching did the rest. Heritage repeats as state softball champs with a 3-0 win over Bishop Snyder.

Insurance
Jessie Mohl came up huge (again) for Heritage, driving a fly-ball triple to left field to lead off the sixth. Marissa Mangini got an RBI with a ground out to second. Corrie Boggess singled to right, and pinch runner Sam Green scored on Ashley Niesman’s fly-ball double to center.
American Heritage 3, Bishop Snyder 0, mid-sixth

Escaping a jam
Second and third, two outs, and Corrie Boggess pitches her way out of a fifth-inning jam. She got Natasha Kistler to ground out to second to end the threat. Boggess has been a ground-ball pitcher through-and-through here at the state tournament, and her team is helping her out with steady fielding.

Breakthrough
American Heritage third baseman Jessie Mohl drilled a hard ground ball to second base, which Bishop Snyder’s Sam Hume booted. In fairness, it was a screamer at Hume. Marissa Mangini bunted Mohl to second, and Mohl scored on Corrie Boggess’s soft line-drive single to left. Boggess moved to second on the play, and was replaced by Sam Green. Whitney Farris was hit by a pitch and stole second on defensive indifference. But Sydney Wright struck out Ashley Niesman and Sarah Collier to end the threat.

Scoreless pitchers’ duel?
Two innings in and all we’ve seen is great, great fielding. Bishop Snyder has two hits and has had two runners in scoring position, but Heritage made several big plays to escape those problems. The Stallions haven’t had a base runner yet.
Scoreless through two innings

Defensively stellar first inning
American Heritage pitcher Corrie Boggess ripped a line drive to right field, but Bishop Snyder’s Jessica Halbert made a lunging snag to save a hit. In the bottom half, a Bishop Snyder single put runners on the corners with one out, and Snyder pressed the issue by sending the hitter to second. Heritage’s Ashley Niesman cut off the throw to second and gunned home, nailing Snyder’s sprinting Natasha Kistler at the plate. To finish the inning, Tara Pancione made a diving catch on a foul pop.
