Softball: Gardens’ Shelby Turnier, Jupiter’s Steve Ahern win state awards

By Jeff Greer

Florida Dairy Farmers is set to announce the class-by-class players and coaches of the year Tuesday, and two locals will be among the winners.

Palm Beach Gardens ace pitcher Shelby Turnier won the Class 8A Player of the Year award, and is in the running for the Dairy Farmer Miss Softball award for the whole state. Jupiter coach Steve Ahern, who coached the Warriors to their first state tournament in program history, was the 8A coach of the year. He’ll also be a candidate for statewide coach of the year.

Turnier was undefeated as a starting pitcher during the regular season, finishing 22-0 and helping Gardens reach the No. 1 ranking in both the ESPN and MaxPreps national high school softball polls.

Ahern’s team stunned Gardens for the District 9-8A championship, and then rinsed and repeated that act a week later, dropping its rival from the regional playoffs. Jupiter lost 5-4 to Miami Palmetto in the state semifinals on Sunday.
