Baseball: Dick Howser High School All-Star Game is June 2 at Roger Dean Stadium

By Matt Porter

For the 25th year, Palm Beach County’s baseball season will have a grand finale.

The county’s best seniors will play Saturday, June 2 at Roger Dean Stadium in the 25th annual Dick Howser High School All-Star Game.

Potential future stars like Florida signees Kevin Stypulkowski (King’s Academy) and Brady Roberson (Palm Beach Central), Florida State commit Jamal Martin (Dwyer) and Miami signee Peter Rivera (Wellington) headline a roster that includes talent from all corners of Palm Beach County. Every player on the North and South squads will cap their high school career with a big-league experience.

Not only will the players get to play on a professional field, they’ll wear uniforms donated from the clubs that call Roger Dean Stadium home. North squad players will don Miami Marlins uniforms and Jupiter Hammerheads caps, while the South team will wear St. Louis Cardinals uniforms and Palm Beach Cardinals hats.

Before they take batting and infield practice, they’ll see those uniforms hanging in their personalized locker stalls as clubhouse attendants attend to them. Chick-fil-A donated a clubhouse spread for the players and coaches.

“There are 790 kids who have done this since we started it in 1988,” said Bill Pruitt, Roger Dean Stadium’s advisory board chairman. “Most of them, when they walk in and see that clubhouse set up, they’re never experienced that. The name’s on your locker, the uniform’s hanging in the locker. Some of them are going on to college and they’ll experience a little of that. Some of them, it’s the last time they’ll put on a baseball uniform. It’s a neat way to go out.”

A showcase batting order will be in effect, with every player batting. The game will last three hours or ten innings, whichever comes first. Tickets will be good for the Lakeland Flying Tigers vs. Jupiter Hammerheads Florida State League game that begins at 6:35 p.m.

Rosters were selected by head coaches of area high schools. Coaches could nominate seniors from their own teams, but could not vote for them.
