Cathy Morris Drake, member of three state softball champion teams at Cardinal Newman, dies of cancer

By Post Staff

Back in the early 1980s, nobody was surprised when the state softball tournament rolled around and Cardinal Newman High arrived to claim another trophy.
Not everybody was particularly excited about that notion, either.

“Oh, no, not them,” coach Sam Budnyk once overheard two rival players saying as the Crusaders checked into their hotel.

Cardinal Newman’s dynasty was that powerful, thanks in large part to shortstop Cathy Morris, a three-time state champion who merited a place in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd and won a national championship at then-Palm Beach Junior College.

Ms. Morris, more recently known as Catherine Morris Drake, died of cancer Saturday. She was 45.
