Parents-only crowd for today’s 11 a.m. start. Here are the lineups:
American Heritage (22-7)
2 – Anfernee Seymour, RF
12 – Trevor Maloney, CF
5 – Jonathan India, SS
4 – Corey Cohen, 1B
14 – Connor Power, 3B
9 – Chris Canavan, C
22 – Josh Glick, DH
7 – Michael Shephard, 2B
1 – Todd Isaacs, LF
— LHP Dylan Silva (5-2)
6 — Christian Dicks, CF
4 — Mitch Buchanan, 2B
22 — Matt Fitzsimmons, RF
27 — Walker Lockett, RHP
20 — David Boyle, 3B
15 — Brooks Lockett, LF
12 — Casey Cribb, C
33 — Dillon McNulty, DH
17 — Mac Wilson, SS
– RHP Walker Lockett (7-1)
AH: Lockett is the challenge American Heritage must overcome. He’s 6-foot-6, signed to USF, and throws hard. Looks imposing out there, sorta like Chris Volstad. Starts with a four-pitch strikeout of Seymour, all fastballs. Bends Maloney’s knees with an inside breaker, but Maloney singles up the middle. Baltimore chop to third eats up Boyle, allowing India to reach.
Cohen hits a tailor-made double-play ball to short. Wilson flips to second for the out, but India’s slide forces second baseman Buchanan to throw high to first. Cohen’s safe. Runners on the corners, two down.
Double steal doesn’t work. Cohen jumps for second, and Lockett hadn’t even thought about beginning his windup. Maloney stranded at third. Providence gets a 1-4-3 pickoff to end it. 0-1-1, 1 LOB, 0-0
PRO: Heritage needs a monster effort from lefty starter Dylan Silva to win. In yesterday’s nine-inning semifinal win, Heritage used starter Dylan Arnold (2-plus innings) and relievers Peter Castillo (3) and Josh Glick (4), leaving Silva, Maloney and Alec Feigenbaum as the available arms. Silva, a Florida State recruit, needs a Division I-level start today.
Silva issues a leadoff walk, but picks off Dicks at first. He strikes out Buchanan for the second out. Fitzsimmons’ chopper to third hugs the line all the way to the wall. He gets to second with two outs.
Lockett, Providence’s top power hitter, hits a long, loud fly to right, but it’s hauled in. 0-1-0, 1 LOB, 0-0
AH: Lockett’s throwing easy gas. Power and Canavan hit lil’ pokes for two quick outs. Glick, the hero of yesterday’s win, makes better contact, but he’s retired from short. Nothing out of the infield. 0-0-0, 0 LOB, 0-0
PRO: Not what Heritage fans want to see: Working against Boyle, Silva throws a 1-1 pitch in the dirt and grimaces. Heritage’s trainer, and coach Carm Mazza, come out to talk to him. The trainer looks at his right ankle, Silva’s plant leg. He throws three practice pitches and nods to the trainer. If he’s hurt, he’s not leaving this game.
Silva had trouble with his other ankle earlier in the season.
Silva goes 3-and-2 on Boyle, who lines a single past a diving India at short. He strikes out Brooks Lockett. India collects a grounder from Cribb and turns a 6-3 double play. 0-1-0, 0 LOB, 0-0
AH: Lockett hits the leadoff man, Shepard. Isaacs sac-bunts the runner to second, and Seymour’s grounder to the mound gets Shepard to third with two outs. Maloney strikes out looking. 0-0-0, 1 LOB, 0-0
PRO: Silva allows a leadoff single to McNulty. Pinch-runner Hunter Jones scampers to second on an inside pitch that gets away from Canavan. Mazza comes out to argue that the pitch hit the bat, but to no avail. The batter, Wilson, strikes out looking.
Silva’s stuff has plenty of movement, and when he’s off, he can get wild. He’s a little off. He walks Dicks for the second time. First and second with one out. Silva walks Buchanan to load the bases. Fitzsimmons, who came in batting .384 with a team-high 26 RBI, hits a fly to short right. Seymour makes a running catch and comes up firing, but the throw is up the line and Canavan can’t make the tag. 1-0 Providence. Lockett adds an RBI single to make it 2-0. Silva gets a pop to second to end it. 2-2-0, 2 LOB, 2-0 Providence
AH: India raps a single into center. Cohen does the same. Then, baserunning mistakes cost the Stallions again. India is caught too far off second, and has no choice but to run. He’s thrown out at third by a mile. Then Power taps one up the first-base side and steps outside the basepath trying to avoid the ball. Two down. Canavan strikes out. 0-2-0, 1 LOB, 2-0 Providence
PRO: Silva strikes out Brooks Lockett for the second time. He gets Cribb looking. McNulty grounds to first. Heritage has to feel some momentum from that. 0-0-0, 0 LOB, 2-0 Providence
AH: Glick pops to short left. Shepard reaches on an infield single, which forced shortstop Wilson to make a long throw. Isaacs grounds to the mound, moving Shepard to second. Seymour singles to right. Shepard rounds third, and it’s good he holds, because Fitzsimmons throws a cannon relay back to the infield.
Big spot for Maloney with runners on the corners and two down. Seymour runs from first on 0-2, and again, Lockett hasn’t even started his windup. Rather than take the bait and try to pick him off, Providence lets Seymour get back to first. Shepard stays at third.
Heritage tried the same play again — Seymour running from first, Shepard looking to break from third — but second baseman Buchanan goes home this time. He nails Shepard for the third out. 0-2-0, 1 LOB, 2-0 Providence
PRO: Silva allows another walk, but a groundout and two flyouts keeps the score as it is. 0-0-0, 1 LOB, 2-0 Providence
AH: Shepard strikes out. India singles to left. Cohen bounces into a 6-3 double play. 0-1-0, 0 LOB, 2-0 Providence
PRO: Silva strikes out Walker Lockett. Boyle walks. Silva is called for a balk. He strikes out Brett Lockett, issues another walk and gets a lazy fly from McNulty.
Heritage has three outs left. 0-0-0, 2 LOB, 2-0 Providence
AH: Power grounds to second. Canavan waits out a 3-2 pitch and walks. Glick gets ahead 2-0, forcing Providence reliever Zac Favre and a catcher to run to the bullpen. After a mound visit, Lockett fights back to 2-2. Glick hits into a 6-4-3 double play.
Providence is the 2012 Class 3A state champion. 0-0-0, 0 LOB, FINAL: Jacksonville-Providence 2, American Heritage 0.
