Volleyball: Spanish River’s Brad Thele signs Division I scholarship

By Matt Porter

A rarity: a player from Palm Beach County signed a Division I volleyball scholarship.

Spanish River outside hitter Brad Thele signed with New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Thele, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, was a three-year starter for Spanish River. His AAU team, West Palm Beach-based Ocean Bay Quicksilver, is two-time defending AAU national champions.

NJIT, one of 23 schools that offer Division I men’s volleyball, plays in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association along with Penn State, George Mason, Harvard, Princeton, St. Francis and Sacred Heart.

“I am not aware of any other player from the Palm Beach Area who has signed with a DI school and I have never had a player play for me from Palm Beach,” NJIT coach Ryan McNeil said in an email to the Post.
