Every time Kimmy Bloemers steps on a baseball or softball field, she thinks of her father, Gary Carter.
Though her family grieves over Carter’s passing, Bloemers was happy to accept an invitation to throw out the first pitch at the 25th Dick Howser High School Baseball All-Star Game, held Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium.
“Any way that I can make my dad proud,” Bloemers said. “I’ve always felt that way, even when he was here. I know the way he lived his life and played the game, he honored our family. It’s the least I can do to show the people how much I love my dad and how grateful we are that people support our family.”
Carter, the Hall of Fame catcher for the Montreal Expos and New York Mets and former Palm Beach Atlantic baseball coach, was a Palm Beach Gardens resident who actively involved with numerous charitable organizations in the county. He died Febuary 16 after a nine-month battle with brain cancer.
Roger Dean Stadium Advisory Board Chairman Bill Pruitt said Carter was a friend to many involved with the game and an active board member who had helped with special projects, fantasy camps and sponsor days since his days with the Expos. “In addition, his foundation has given so much to the children of Palm Beach County,” Pruitt said.
Howser, who grew up in West Palm Beach, went to Palm Beach High and starred at Florida State before winning a World Series as manager of the Kansas City Royals, died in 1987 after his own battle with brain cancer.
“Both Dick and Gary were taken away from the game and the people they loved and, who loved them, much too young, by brain tumors,” Pruitt said. “The more you learn about both of them, their life stories, dedication and drive, you understand why they should be an inspiration to all young people, not just those who play the game of baseball. They had a lot of the same character traits.”
Bloemers is Palm Beach Atlantic’s softball coach and was a star softball player at Florida State. She was the 1998 Post All-Area player of the year while playing at King’s Academy.
She said her family is grateful for the support – letters, cards, emails, Facebook messages and flowers – they’ve received over the past year.
“It’s been unbelievable,” Bloemers said. “We’re in the midst of sadness, but it brings us great joy to know how much he was loved by people around the world.”
The game, which features more than 40 of the top high school seniors in the county, begins at 2 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium.
