By Matt Porter

The first Palm Beach County player drafted in this year’s MLB Draft is a hard-throwing reliever who went to Cardinal Newman.

On Tuesday the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected R.J. Alvarez of FAU, in the third round (114th overall) of the MLB Draft.

At Cardinal Newman, Alvarez played for recently retired coach Jack Kokinda.

Two selections after Alvarez, the Atlanta Braves picked Bucky Dent Academy catcher Bryan de la Rosa with the 116th pick.

Palm Beach State right-hander Brandon Welch was taken in the fifth round (170th overall) by the New York Mets. Welch is a Palm Beach Gardens alum.
