Track: Suncoast alum Tony McQuay dominates 400 at NCAAs

By Matt Porter

A Suncoast alum left sparks on the track Wednesday night.

Florida junior Tony McQuay ran 44.67 seconds in the 400-meter dash prelims at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines.

That’s the second-fastest 400 time in the country this year, and fastest by a collegian.

It’s also a personal best for McQuay, who ran a 44.68 at the 2011 U.S. track and field championships last year, beating former Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner.

The 400 record is 43.18, set 12 years ago by Michael Johnson.
