Eight local schools to participate in Miami Dolphins 7-on-7 tournament

By Jeff Greer

With the Heath Evans and Under Armour 7-on-7 tournaments in the books, attention now turns to this weekend’s Dolphins 7-on-7. Five local teams will play in this year’s field, including 2011 runner-up Cardinal Newman.

Boynton Beach, Dwyer, John I. Leonard, Jupiter, Jupiter Christian, Park Vista and Village Academy join Newman in the 55-team field, which starts 8 a.m. Saturday with pool play and ends with Sunday’s 9 a.m. final at Sun Life Stadium. Saturday’s games will be played at Central Park in Plantation. The winner will represent South Florida in the HSPD High School 7-on-7 Championships in Indianapolis in July.

Both Newman and Vista enter the tournament with high expectations. Newman started last year’s tournament as the 48th seed and made it all the way to the finals, and this year’s team possesses many of the same athletes who helped the Crusaders make that run. Meanwhile Vista is a week removed from the Under Armour 7-on-7 title, and the second-year spread offense is starting to look pretty efficient with athletes like LeKraig Bens and Qwad Martin leading the way.
