IMG Academies to field a football team in 2013

By Matt Porter

There is a preschool, a middle school and a high school at IMG Academies, the Bradenton-based sports training facility. Next year, there will be a high school football team for the first time.

The team, which will be coached by former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, will compete as an FHSAA independent, an IMG spokesperson said. It will play both FHSAA and non-FHSAA teams.

A schedule will be released in the coming months, the spokesperson said.

The school has high school teams in basketball, baseball, lacrosse and soccer, as well as post-graduate basketball, baseball, and soccer teams.

IMG has a residency program and hosts weekly camps in football and several other sports. IMG’s football academy began in 2010 and has since hosted workouts with several NFL draft picks, including Cam Newton and Ryan Tannehill.
