John I. Leonard alum Ryan Pickering to run in World Junior Championships

By Jeff Greer

John I. Leonard alum Ryan Pickering made all kinds of noise on the high school level. Now the freshman distance runner at the University of Oregon is doing it on the international circuit.

Pickering this weekend won the men’s 10,000-meter title at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind., clinching his spot in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Spain next month. The freshman finished in 30:56.77, beating his next closest competitor, Grove City College’s Jacob Kildoo, by eight seconds.

The WJCs will be held in Barcelona, and feature the world’s best track athletes under the age of 19.
