Baseball: Gardens alum J.D. Underwood to Miami

By Matt Porter

J.D. Underwood, a Palm Beach Gardens alum and sophomore at Palm Beach State, will play for Miami after next season.

Palm Beach State coach Kyle Forbes said Underwood, a right-handed pitcher, will join the Hurricanes as a junior in 2014.

Underwood, the son of former major league pitcher Tom Underwood, was named the Southern Conference player of the year after going 6-1 as a pitcher and batting .372 as an everyday first baseman. He was also a first-team JUCO All-State selection.

He began 2012 as a closer, but Palm Beach State coach Kyle Forbes felt Underwood’s repertoire — command of a fastball that touches 93, a biting curve and a sharp slider — was too good to keep in the bullpen.

“His future is unbelievable,” Forbes said in May.

The Panthers (35-14) lost in the finals of the Florida College System Activities Association Region 8 tournament, the state’s JUCO championship.
