Major League Lacrosse hopes all-star game here will lead to Palm Beach County franchise

By Matt Porter

Major League Lacrosse doesn’t have a team within 650 miles of Palm Beach County, but is having its all-star game in Boca Raton this weekend. Commissioner David Gross doesn’t hide his motivation for putting the game here.

“We’re playing this all-star game as a test run,” he said. “If things go well, hopefully we can have a team in South Florida in the next few years.”

The game — the annual marquee event for the decade-old, eight-team league — will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (ESPN2) at Florida Atlantic’s new football stadium. It will be the first outdoor professional lacrosse event in Florida.

Since becoming commissioner in 2004, Gross has expanded to places such as California (Carson and San Jose) and Chicago, but those teams haven’t survived. He is optimistic about Palm Beach County because youth and high school teams are flourishing here and because FAU’s 30,000-seat stadium could be an ideal home.
