Palm Beach County’s other marquee summer football festival is this weekend in Delray Beach.
Like the Heath Evans 7-on-7 tournament, the Brandon Flowers 7-on-7 is put on by an NFL player with area ties. Like Evans, Flowers, who grew up in Delray and starred at Atlantic High, has invited a host of his buddies to the event.
Flowers’ tournament, which begins at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Seacrest Athletic Complex (Old Atlantic High), includes squads representing some of the better high school programs in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
The field of sixteen teams includes Atlantic, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Dwyer, Lake Worth Palm Beach Central, Palm Beach Lakes, Park Vista, Royal Palm Beach and Village Academy.
Out-of-area teams are Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach), Deerfield Beach, Hollywood Hills, Miami-McArthur, Miami Northwestern and North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek).
In addition, several NFL players have been invited.
Those with local ties include Baltimore Ravens receiver Anquan Boldin (Pahokee), New York Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley and Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Preston Parker (Atlantic), Kansas City Chiefs safety Abe Elam and Oakland Raiders receiver Jacoby Ford (Cardinal Newman) and Washington Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon (John I. Leonard).
Other NFL players slated to attend include Miami Dolphins running back Daniel Thomas, Dolphins offensive lineman Mike Pouncey, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey, Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White, Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry, Cleveland Browns running back Montario Hardesty, Houston Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson, Buffalo Bills cornerback and first-round pick Stephen Gilmore and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr.
On Thursday and Friday, Flowers will host charity get-togethers at the Omphoy Ocean Resort in Palm Beach. For more information, visit Prep and Sports.
