Olympic dream rings true for sprinter Tony McQuay

Tony McQuay lay in his childhood bed last week and looked around. Medals and trophies covered his walls, hanging reminders of every step he’s taken, every race he’s run in the first 22 years of his life.

It was the first chance he had to soak in reality — after years of countless feats and frustrations, he’d reached the ultimate pinnacle: the Olympics.

The whirlwind that followed McQuay’s second-place Olympic Trials finish in the 400 meters, which qualified him to run for Team USA at the London Olympics next month, postponed any emotions that might have immediately come after he realized a long-held dream.

Those delayed feelings came back and avalanched McQuay once he returned to his parents’ Riviera Beach home.
