Hoops: Murray Smith leaves Summit Christian, close to Lake Worth job

By Jeff Greer

Longtime Palm Beach County basketball coach Murray Smith has left Summit Christian.

Smith is close to taking the head coaching job at Lake Worth, where former coach Mike Cavanagh resigned after the 2011-12 season. Lake Worth Principal George Lockhart, who was away on business earlier this week, must approve Smith as the coach before the move is official.

JR Gamble, Summit Christian’s athletic director, will be Summit’s basketball coach, according to several sources. Gamble posted a classified advertisement on FHSAA.org asking for opponents for Summit’s upcoming season.

Smith’s move isn’t surprising — his departure coincides with the graduation of Farad Cobb and Brandon Williams, two Division I signees. The Saints won the 2011 Class 1A state championship, and reached it two years prior.

He won back-to-back titles at Cardinal Newman in 1999 and 2000.
