Middle schoolers receiving scholarship offers: Right or wrong?

By Jeff Greer

Are college coaches crossing the line when they offer scholarships to middle schoolers?

This isn’t the first time a middle schooler has received a verbal scholarship offer, but recent news of LSU’s offer to rising eighth grader Dylan Moses, a speedy running back from Baton Rouge, La., has swept the Internet and brought back a debate that pops up frequently in recruiting circles. Where should recruiters — and the football community as a whole — draw the line?

Remember: LSU’s offer isn’t without precedent. Wake Forest offered a scholarship to Chris Leak, the former Florida quarterback, when he was in eighth grade. And seventh grader David Sills committed to USC back in 2010. MaxPreps has a whole list of eighth and ninth graders who’ve received scholarship offers (all offers are verbal until Sept. 1 of the prospect’s senior year).
