FAU, promotions company close to contract deal to host three high school games

FAU and the Gridiron Challenge Foundation, a high school football promotional company, are close to a contract deal that would allow six Palm Beach County high schools to play at FAU Stadium this fall.

Gridiron Challenge Event Director Billy Fleming said Thursday his company and FAU had a “slight miscommunication” during contract negotiations, which has delayed the official announcement of three Sept. 8 games to be hosted by FAU. The tentative schedule would start at noon, with West Boca Raton vs. Palm Beach Gardens, followed by Boynton Beach-Spanish River at 3 p.m. and Palm Beach Central-Lake Worth at 6.

FAU media relations director Katrina McCormack could not confirm the contract negotiations, saying nothing had been finalized, but Fleming said the games, as of now, will go on as originally scheduled.

“It was a slight miscommunication between us, but we are still planning to hold the event,” Fleming said, without going into detail.

Gridiron Challenge Foundation put on the 2010 event in Daytona Beach that saw Glades Central and Glades Day play teams from Texas and Georgia, respectively. A memo to the tripleheader’s six coaches, sent in June by Fleming, said all players, band members and cheerleaders were invited to the event.

It would be the first time FAU Stadium hosted high school football games since its opening last October. As of now, the event doesn’t have a name.
