Former Atlantic QB AJ Puente transfers to Boca Christian

By Jeff Greer

He started all 10 games for Atlantic last year and finished fourth in the area in passing, but quarterback AJ Puente left the Eagles today for Boca Christian.

The quarterback battle between Puente and transfer Jay Mentecky became a focal point for Atlantic all off-season. Sources close to the program said Monday that Puente was told by head coach Chris Bean that Mentecky would be the starter. That prompted Puente, who threw for 1,467 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011, to leave Atlantic.

Atlantic head coach Chris Bean could not be reached Monday night, but Puente confirmed the transfer Monday night, saying his mother works at Boca Christian and that he’d attended the school for all but the past two years of his education.

Puente (6-1, 195 pounds) was a Post All-Area honorable mention selection last fall, and started several times in 2010.
