Former John I. Leonard DE Andy Daceus goes JUCO

After flirting with several Division I programs last school year, former John I. Leonard defensive lineman Andy Daceus will play at a junior college.

Daceus, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive end, will play at Butler (Kan.) Community College, John I. Leonard Athletic Director Scott Siegel said.

“Basically, that’s his best route,” Siegel said. “He was on the bubble at a lot of places. Everything kept falling apart. The best thing for him is to go to a community college and work on his skills, and hopefully when in two years, he’ll play at a Division I school. That’s his goal.”

Though its origin is unclear, miscommunication has been a big part of Daceus’ recruitment.

He originally committed to FAU but later backed off. He then committed to UAB, but according to Siegel, the school didn’t have a scholarship for him the night before signing day. Believing Western Michigan had offered him, Daceus announced his intentions to attend WMU on signing day. The Broncos had not offered.

“It’s a funny game with recruiting,” Siegel said. “Andy had a lot of hopes, and a lot of people were promising him things. He had preferred walk-on spots at different places. People were telling him, if this kid doesn’t work out, he’d be next in line. The cards didn’t go right for him.”

As a senior, Daceus was a first-team Post All-Area selection.

Several NFL players have spent time at Butler, including former John I. Leonard lineman Markus White, who went on to Florida State. White now plays linebacker for the Washington Redskins.
