Former Palm Beach Gardens RB Roshard Burney to play at Garden City CC

By Jeff Greer

He had a breakout senior season and it paid off. Roshard Burney signed with Big 12-bound West Virginia after running for 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns and helping Gardens reach the Class 8A regional finals.

But bad news came this week. Burney, who signed with WVU on national signing day and matriculated to the Morgantown, W. Va., campus this summer, found out he’ll have to enroll at Garden City (Kan.) Community College after his test scores weren’t accepted by the NCAA.

“Roshard will get good competition,” former Gardens coach Chris Davis said. “God has a plan for him and this is just a hurdle he’ll have to clear.”

Burney, who transferred from Glades Day to Gardens after his sophomore year of high school, originally had the test scores and grades to qualify, but the NCAA flagged his SAT. He was allowed to retake the SAT this summer, but his scores didn’t qualify him for WVU.

Garden City is one of the top junior-college programs in the country, competing in the fiercely competitive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Burney (6-foot, 210 pounds) was the Post Offensive Player of the Year last fall, and is expected to play right away at Garden City.
