Atlantic TE Sam Kelley suspended for 6 weeks

By Jeff Greer

Atlantic tight end Sam Kelley will miss a major chunk of the 2012 season after the Florida High School Athletic Association handed him a six-game suspension on Tuesday.

Kelley, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior, allegedly struck an American Heritage player in the face with his fist in the first quarter of Atlantic’s 29-0 loss on Friday night in Delray Beach, according to the FHSAA’s official report obtained by the Post. Kelley received the maximum penalty for a “level 2″ unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and Atlantic Athletic Director Kevin Logan said Wednesday the school will not appeal the suspension.

Kelley was immediately ejected from the game after the 15-yard penalty. The official’s report to the state claims that the tight end repeatedly ignored whistles blowing the play dead.

As a result of the suspension, Kelley will only return for Atlantic’s final three games, two of which are pivotal district matchups. His first game back will be an Oct. 26 contest at Royal Palm Beach, considered Atlantic’s chief rival for a playoff spot out of District 13-7A.
