Atlantic’s Mandy Freeman named to U.S. U-17 Women’s World Cup team

By Matt Porter

Atlantic High senior Miranda “Mandy” Freeman will represent the U.S. on the international stage.

Freeman was one of 21 players selected for the American side at the 2012 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, to be played in Azerbaijan from Sept. 22 through Oct. 13.

Freeman, a defender who called “physically dominating,” made the squad after a training camp in Carson, California from August 19-26, at which the U.S. defeated China in two friendly matches by a combined 7-2 score.

The U.S. U-17 Women went 22-5-6 in the last two years (13-1-4 in international games).

Freeman, whose listed hometown is Royal Palm Beach, is the only Florida native on the U.S. roster.

Before this school year, Freeman was named one of 40 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Americans.

Freeman, who plays travel soccer with Lady Renegades and has verbally committed to the University of Southern California, was a first-team Post All-Area selection last season.

As previously reported, American Heritage forward Sebastian Elney was placed on the men’s U-17 team.
